Being a type 1 is a lot of work. My life revolves around my disease. It controls my life day in and day out. About a year ago, I started thinking about having my first tattoo done focused on being a diabetic and incorporating everything about me in the tattoo.

Recently was contacted by Nate on Twitter (@TattooTokyo and @NateDever) who wanted to share the story behind his Diabetic themed tattoo.

Here’s his Tattoo and his story:

I was diagnosed as a type 1 (juvenile) diabetic on 05/29/2003.

Being a type 1 is a lot of work. My life revolves around my disease. It controls my life day in and day out. About a year ago, I started thinking about having my first tattoo done focused on being a diabetic and incorporating everything about me in the tattoo.

The tattoo is of the medical alert symbol, however instead of a sword running down the middle of the symbol (as normal) I had the artist put a syringe to signify my daily activity of having to take shots of insulin.

I’m also an avid golfer and at the top of the tattoo has a golf ball and on the golf ball the word Type 1 is “stamped” on the ball. Going on the middle of the tattoo over the syringe is the Biohazard logo, which is on my “sharps container” that holds all my needles. On the outside of the tattoo are barbell weights as I am a professional drug free bodybuilder to commorate my passion for bodybuilding.

Lastly in the word “Diabetic” on the tattoo, the letter “D” is written in the “old english” style I grew up in Detroit, Michigan and that is the logo of the Detroit Tigers baseball team and the city of Detroit is always associated with the Old English D.

We think it’s awesome to hear the story behind Nate’s Tattoo, and if you wanted to find out more information on this then Nate recommends that you check out the following link: http://www.jdrf.org/
